Institute of Clinical and Preventive Medicine was founded with the aim of developing research in the fields of oncology and oncoprophylaxis, as well as tuberculosis and sepsis; to conduct organized pilot studies on the optimization of cancer screening, as well as to implement a population study unique in Europe for the prevention of stomach and intestinal cancer (GISTAR). In the institute, common cancer patients and c. the creation of a patient biobank, which is intended to be included in the structure of the National Biobank. On the basis of the institute, jobs are created for doctoral students, postdoctoral students, etc. c. for young scientists. Residents and students are recruited for research work. The institute closely cooperates with Latvian research and medical institutions, the private sector, as well as with leading research institutions in the Baltic region, Europe, the United States and Asia. The activity of the institute is interdisciplinary.

With the establishment of the new Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences of the University of Latvia from July 2024, the institute operates as a structural unit of the faculty.

The institute conducts research in the following directions:

  • The field of public health and disease prevention.
  • Implementation of population studies.
  • Screening and intervention studies.
  • In the fields of clinical medicine, incl. oncology, microbiome and infection research (sepsis, tuberculosis, etc.), internal medicine and surgical pathology, laboratory medicine and visual diagnostics, as well as other natural sciences.
